How can nineteenth-century art be categorized within its social context, and what can be found behind and outside of the familiar motifs? A seminar at the Technische Universität Berlin linked artworks in Berlin’s Alte Nationalgallerie to their historical contexts (city, work, war, gender, colonialism). A networked data model was used to document the findings. This allowed the descriptions of the works to be diversified and connected, and even made them contradictory. This contrasts with the way that paintings are formally described and classified in museum databases.
