Podcast: “Die koloniale Vergangenheit von Museen erforschen” (Investigating Museums’ Colonial Pasts)

Episode with Mareike Vennen, Institute of Art Studies, Technische Universität Berlin, and Lennon Mhishi, Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford, in Meridian, research podcast of the Berlin Center for Global Engagement (BCGE)

December 19, 2022

This podcast aims to present work being done by scholars investigating issues of collaboration between the global South and the global North, of academic freedom, and research diplomacy. Researchers speak to each other about their interest in their subject, their work with partners in the global South, and the current research and debates surrounding it.

In a special episode of Meridian, the research podcast of the Berlin Center for Global Engagement (BCGE), Mareike Vennen and Lenon Mhishi give listeners insights into the researching being conducted in museums on the colonial past.

In the age of empires, museums played a central role in the often-violent appropriation of cultural heritage, natural history, and resources. In the last few decades, artists, scholars, and activists have taken a critical look at this history and called on museums to examine their colonial heritage and take a stand against racism. In this episode, we attend an event being held at the Berliner Museum für Naturkunde as part of the 2022 Berlin Science Week. Surrounded by thousands of stones that are being exhibited in the Minerals Hall, we ask our guests Mareike Vennen and Lennon Mhishi what a piece of quartz or a dinosaur bone can tell us about colonial practices of keeping silent about the past.
